OLCTS Desktop Installer Update

FOR TRAINING LAB MANAGERS:

Note: An updated version of the "OLCTS Desktop Setup.exe" was posted here on January 25, 2012. Training Administrators using the OLCTS Desktop courses in a networked training lab environment will want to download this new version, uninstall their existing OLCTS Desktop software and install the updated version, as important changes involving system useability have been made. These changes do not effect individual (non-lab) OLCTS Desktop users.

How do we set up a language training lab?

FOR TRAINING LAB MANAGERS:

If you are creating a new multi-station training lab, we recommended a higher end hardware spec as follows (this is for laptops in a lab, but a desktop would be similar):

  • Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo (or better) processor; or AMD Athlon dual core (or better) processor.

  • RAM: 2 GB (3~4GB would be better, and is generally required or standard on Windows Vista or Windows 7 operating system-equipped computers)

  • Hard disk: 120GB (or more)

  • Operating system: Windows Vista or Windows 7 is ideal. Windows XP is also acceptable if the system meets the higher graphics hardware specifications (as described below).

  • Video controller card: Dedicated Video Card with 256Mb of dedicated memory or better. We have found the higher-end NVIDIA GeForce series to be particularly good, but similar ATI cards work as well. The system does not work properly with integrated graphics/graphics accelerator cards!

  • Headset: Noise-cancelling type headsets from Plantronics, Logitech or other manufacturers work with varying degrees of success. Look for "gaming"-type headsets, not those made for telephony purposes. We do not recommend analog headsets for noisy environments.

  • Display: There are no strict requirements, but we have found that 17-inch and above are suitable choices.

  • Wireless card: Depending on the networking plans, we recommend a wireless card that supports at least the 802.11g standard (802.11a or 802.11n would be better).

  • Optical drive: CD/DVD+RW disk drive (for installing Desktop Course Manager software and content packages)

Configurations like these are usually available as "gaming laptops" from standard providers like Dell, HP, Toshiba, etc.  (There are no specific requirements in terms of manufacturer.)

OLCTS Unit Training Manager Service software

Additionally, if the computers in your training facility have the ability to communicate via an internal Windows workgroup network, you will want to utilize our OLCTS Unit Training Manager Service software. This program allows training managers and/or lab administrators to easily and remotely access trainee progress reports for review, print out, etc.; and allow usage of Operational Language Training and Culture Training programs specifically to trainees who have been entered into the system and given unique usernames and passwords.

Download additional informational materials from the "OLCTS: Unit Training Manager Service Setup" item under the "Courses Master List" section of this website (available to registered Support site users); then request Unit Training Manager (UTM) application download access from our Technical Support personnel by contacting: dodsupport@alelo.com

How many trainees can use the software installed in one computer?

There is no limit to the number of trainees who can use the system installed in one computer. Each trainee uses his/her own login data to keep his/her progress and proficiency reports separate from other trainees.

Multiple computers running the system can be networked and the progress and proficiency report for each trainee can be centrally managed using the Unit Training Manager Service.

Is the system available on the Web?

The Web-based versions of Alelo Operational Language and Culture Training Systems are just beginning to come on line. "OLCTS Web Pashto" language and culture course may be accessed from the "Courses Master List" section of this website (available to registered Support site users).  Though they do not do so currently, future web-based courses will tie into a central or branch LMS.

How quickly do you respond to tech support questions?

Usually, you will receive an immediate response to your support inquiry if you contact us during regular business hours (Monday through Friday, 9:00 am to 5:30 pm Pacific time). If you contact us after hours, you can generally expect to receive a response within 24 hours or on the following business day.

What skills do trainees need to use the system?

Essentially, they don't need any previous computer experience, or language skills or knowledge.

The system works for virtually everyone, from high aptitude to those who think are no aptitude language learners.

Do you certify instructors?

We currently do not offer trainer certification, but we provide many customized train-the-trainer courses and support options.

How long does the course take?

Each version of the Operational Language & Culture Training System is different. The differences relate to the language (Iraqi Arabic, Pashto, Dari, etc.), and selection and number of lessons and missions in your Course of Instruction.

It takes approximately 30~40 hours to complete a "basic" course, and up to 80~100 hours to complete all lessons, missions and tests of the current versions of the various language and culture courses. Individual lessons are designed to take 2 to 4 hours to complete to an acceptable degree of competency.

Do I need to upgrade to the newest version of the system?

We strongly recommend that you do. We add myriad enhancements in functionality, performance, stability and lessons to every new version of the system. And updating your system is easy.

Please read the Announcements section of this website for instructions on how to obtain the newest version.
